TikTok Ban: Apple Issues ‘Unprecedented’ Response For iPhone Users

You’ll know by now that TikTok has been banned in the United States, and despite initial expectations that it would simply mean users couldn’t update the app or download it, the app went dark. But a series of remarkable things have happened as a result, including Apple issuing a support document—unheard of in the case of an app removal—and now TikTok’s owner Bytedance has said it’s brought the service back again! So, what does this mean for its re-appearance on the Apple App Store, and Apple’s response to it. Read on.

Apple to pay $95 million to settle claims it used Siri to eavesdrop on customers

Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a civil lawsuit accusing the privacy-minded company of deploying its virtual assistant Siri to eavesdrop on people using its iPhone and other trendy devices.

The proposed settlement filed Tuesday in an Oakland, California, federal court would resolve a 5-year-old lawsuit revolving around allegations that Apple surreptitiously activated Siri to record conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with the virtual assistant for more than a decade.

Apple’s AirPods Pro Could Soon Disrupt the Hearing Aid Industry

If you didn’t hear the big news at Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event on Monday, well, the company has plans to help with that. Imminent upgrades to Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro wireless earbuds will soon outfit the ubiquitous headphones with hearing aid features, further disrupting a market well in the throes of a disruption already. Functionally, Apple is taking the same approach as many low-cost, over-the-counter hearing aid manufacturers by providing a product that does double duty as both Bluetooth earbuds and a hearing aid. The catch is that it isn’t...

I'm Bummed the Apple iPhone 16 Adopted Qi2 Before Samsung and Google Did

I’m back with another iPhone versus Android comparison. But this time, I’m writing as a forlorn Android user scorned by the manufacturers who make the ecosystem as popular as it is. Google and Samsung failed to adopt Qi2 this year, the new wireless charging standard incorporating faster charging speeds and magnetic capabilities. But Apple didn’t. It included the Qi2 charging ability in both tiers of the iPhone 16. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are equipped with Qi2, which supports faster charging over MagSafe. And since Apple owns its...

The new AirPods 4 were long awaited and are now in two versions — with and without Active Noise Cancellation. The Apple AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation include a beefier price because of the added feature that reduces...

Apple Must Pay $14.3 Billion In Back Taxes, Top EU Court Rules

The European Court of Justice ordered Apple to pay $14.3 billion (€13 billion) in back taxes on Tuesday, siding with the European Commission’s stance that tax breaks offered to the iPhone maker by Ireland—where Apple’s EU business is headquartered—as illegal.

The ECJ said its ruling was the “final judgment in the matter” and described Ireland’s tax breaks to Apple as “unlawful aid” that the country is “required to recover.”

Tuesday’s ruling reverses a lower court decision from 2020, which had ruled in favor of the Irish government.

U.K. Authority Closes Competition Probes Into Google, Apple App Stores

The U.K.’s antitrust authority closed investigations into Google’s Play Store and Apple’s AAPL 0.27 %increase; green up pointing triangle App Store as it prepares for the rollout of new rules that give the watchdog greater powers to boost competition in digital markets. The Competition and Markets Authority said Wednesday that it expects to consider competition concerns regarding the U.S. tech giants’ app stores under a new regulatory regime after the U.K.’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act was passed in May.
