Red States Ask Supreme Court To Uphold Laws Protecting Women’s Sports

Two Republican attorneys general asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to uphold their states’ laws designed to prevent men from competing in women’s sports. Together, Idaho and West Virginia’s cases ask the Court to consider whether such laws violate Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause and Title IX, which prohibits public schools and universities that receive federal funding from discriminating based on sex. Twenty-five states around the county have passed similar laws aimed at protecting women’s sports.

Texas Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Gender Transition Care for Minors

The Texas Supreme Court upheld a state law on Friday that bans gender-transition medical treatment for minors, overturning a lower-court ruling that had temporarily blocked the law and dealing a blow to parents of transgender children.

The court, whose nine elected members are all Republicans, voted 8 to 1 in favor of allowing the law, which passed last year, to remain in effect. It bars doctors from prescribing certain medications to minors, like hormones and puberty blockers, and forbids them from performing certain surgical procedures, like mastectomies, on minors.

The GOP’s sudden turn away from gay rights — and acceptance

Americans’ embrace of same-sex rights and acceptance of gay Americans has been one of the steadiest trends in recent political history, with support for same-sex marriage gradually rising from less than 30 percent in the mid-1990s to around 70 percent today. Support has become so strong that pollsters have largely stopped even asking about it.

But there’s increasing evidence that these gains have halted and even reversed somewhat, largely thanks to Republicans moving in the opposite direction — in some cases, sharply.

Gallup is the latest to show this:

Republican Support for Gay Marriage Plummeted over Past Two Years, New Poll Finds

Republican support for gay marriage noticeably declined over the past two years as LGBT activists have increasingly focused their efforts on advocating medical transition for gender-confused youth and the teaching of gender ideology in schools.

After peaking at 55 percent in 2021 and 2022, Republican support for gay marriage is down to 46 percent overall, dropping 9 points in just two years, according to new Gallup polling. Gay-marriage support among Democrats remained steady at 83 percent compared to 74 percent support among independents.

Supreme Court to address state restrictions on gender-affirming care

The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will consider state laws blocking gender-affirming care in young people.

The High Cout announced that it will address challenges to the Tennessee law that bans puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery for minors, NBC revealed in breaking news.

Earlier this year, the court allowed a similar law in Idaho to be enforced in part, NBC News reported at the time.

US Supreme Court to hear challenge to ban on transgender care for minors

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Monday to decide the legality of a Republican-backed ban in Tennessee on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, as the justices waded into another contentious issue implicating LGBT rights.

They took up an appeal by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration of a lower court's decision upholding Tennessee's ban on medical treatments including hormones and surgeries for minors experiencing gender dysphoria. The court will hear the case in its next term, which begins in October.

Supreme Court to hear challenge to Tennessee ban on child transgender procedures

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to take up a challenge by the Biden administration to a Tennessee law that restricts transgender procedures for minors.

The decision to hear the case United States v. Skrmetti marks the first time the high court will rule on matters arising from the major culture war battle over transgender medical treatments for children. The Tennessee law in question restricts puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgery for minors.

Poll: Majority of Americans support preserving Confederate history

A slim majority of Americans (52%) support efforts to preserve the legacy and history of the Confederacy, while 44% oppose such efforts, a new poll finds.

Why it matters: As Juneteenth gains popularity as a national holiday, most Americans still support keeping alive the "Lost Cause" myth, which arose after the Civil War and romanticizes the Confederate uprising, ignoring slavery as its root cause.
