The White House may be courting controversy with President Trump’s plans to accept a luxury jumbo jet from the Qatari government, worth $400 million, as the potential new Air Force One — but his administration wouldn’t be the first to welcome lavish gifts from foreign leaders.

The practice goes all the way back to the founding of the country in 1776, with US leaders receiving all manner of exotic and expensive gifts from royalty and heads of government around the world.

In defending the gift of a super luxury jumbo jet he’s preparing to receive from the royal family of Qatar to use as Air Force One, President Donald Trump described it as a brilliant deal. Not for the American people, it isn’t.

President Trump shot down speculation Friday that he might pardon former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin — whose 2020 murder of George Floyd unleashed months of protests and rioting nationwide — after conservative media personality Ben Shapiro publicly urged the commander-in-chief to do so.

Shapiro’s proposal could spring to mind several questions, including: “Could a president do that?” (Answer: Yes); and, “What would it matter, since Chauvin also is in prison on state charges?” (Answer: It’s complicated).

While speaking on The Ben Shapiro Show hosted by The Daily Wire, Shapiro particularly took aim at a question Carlson had for Trump about former Vice President Mike Pence. Shapiro played a portion of the interview where Carlson asked Trump why Pence has been attacking him and said, "You've always been nice to Pence. I've never heard you criticize Pence."
