North Carolina court race ends as Griffin concedes to Riggs

North Carolina Appeals Court Judge Jefferson Griffin (R) has conceded defeat in a contested race for a seat on the state Supreme Court, bringing an end to a saga that has lasted six months. 

Griffin’s concession to incumbent state Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs (D) came after a ruling from a federal judge for the North Carolina State Board of Elections to certify Riggs as the winner. He said he doesn’t fully agree with the ruling but will not appeal it.

A federal judge ordered the North Carolina Board of Elections on Monday to certify the results of the state’s Supreme Court election, giving Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs the upper hand in the still-contested race.

Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers ruled Monday that the state board must certify the results of the November election, which have been the target of legal challenges by Republican Judge Jefferson Griffin.

Deborah Ross has won reelection in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger Alan Swain with 66 percent of the vote. Ross was first elected to Congress in 2020. She will continue representing much of Wake County, including most of Raleigh and parts of Cary, Morrisville, and Garner.

North Carolina shatters early voting record

North Carolina shattered its early voting record, with more than half the state’s registered voters casting their ballots before Election Day.

By Sunday, 4,465,548 voters had cast their ballots, according to the State Election Board, compared to the previous record of 3.6 million in 2020. In all, 57% of the state’s 7.8 million registered voters have voted. Areas affected by Hurricane Helene had higher levels of early voting — the 25 counties affected had a rate of 58.9% — assuaging concerns about the natural disaster affecting voting.

Early in-person voting in North Carolina exceeds 2020 total

Early in-person voting in North Carolina ends on Saturday, but the number of people who’ve cast ballots by this method already has exceeded the total from four years ago, according to the State Board of Elections.

For the fall 2020 elections, a record 3.63 million people voted during the 17-day early-voting period at hundreds of sites in all 100 counties. This year, the state exceeded that total by late Thursday, with 3.71 million people casting early in-person ballots as of early Friday, said board Executive Director Karen Brinson Bell.

Former Democratic candidate for president and independent Tulsi Gabbard formally announced she is joining the Republican Party at a Trump rally on Tuesday.



The rally was held in Greensboro, North Carolina, a key swing state in the upcoming election.



Gabbard recently joined the Trump campaign as an honorary co-chair for the former president's transition team alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., another former Democrat.
