The U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments Wednesday in a case that could transform public education in the Unites States. For the first time, the justices are being asked to decide whether overtly religious schools may be publicly funded charter schools.

Like 45 other states, Oklahoma has enacted a charter school system to allow some schools more flexibility, autonomy and specialization.

Leader of ‘Black Mass’ Arrested at Kansas Capitol After Punching Protester

The organizer of a “black mass” that took place outside the Kansas state Capitol on Friday amid heavy Catholic protest was arrested shortly afterward in the Capitol building after punching a protester in the face. 

A video from local news outlet WIBW shows Michael Stewart raising his arms and chanting in the Capitol rotunda, surrounded by a number of protesters urging him to stop. A young man later identified as Marcus Schroeder attempted to snatch what appeared to be papers from Stewart’s outstretched hands. 

Satanist leader arrested after physical clash inside Kansas Statehouse during Black Mass

A physical altercation inside the Kansas Statehouse Friday ended with Capitol Police arresting Satanic church leader Michael Stewart, capping off a morning of inflammatory religious demonstration. Stewart punched a man, Marcus Jeremiah Jared Schroeder, who repeatedly attempted to rip a booklet out of his hands while he called out to Satan from the Capitol’s first-floor rotunda. Both men were taken into custody and booked into the Shawnee County Jail, records show.

What we know about claims 70 Christians were beheaded in Democratic Republic of Congo

In February 2025, claims (archived) circulated on social media and news outlets including Fox News and Newsweek that 70 Christians were beheaded in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Media reports and posts (archived) on X (archived), Facebook and Instagram (archived) said the bodies of the victims were found in a church in Kasanga after the victims were kidnapped from Mayeba, both villages in North Kivu province in the country's northeast.

Protestant reverend leads lawsuit against mandatory Bible study in Oklahoma

A coalition of faith leaders, parents, students, and teachers in Oklahoma are suing over a far-right official’s plans to incorporate the Bible into the teaching plans of every public school in the state. In June, Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters (R) issued an edict mandating Sooner State schools “to incorporate the Bible” across all fifth through 12th grade curricula. The directive was “effective immediately,” according to the memorandum instituting the change. It was also immediately controversial, resulting in pushback from educators across the state.

Why the pope just criticized Ukraine

Pope Francis is calling on Ukraine to not let conflict with Russia undermine its support for religious freedom.

After a prayer service on Sunday, the Catholic leader criticized Ukraine’s new law banning churches affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church, arguing that churches shouldn’t become casualties of war.

“In thinking about the laws recently adopted in Ukraine, I fear for the freedom of those who pray, because those who truly pray always pray for all,” the pope said, per Religion News Service.
