Kentucky Derby-winning jockey banned for use of crop

The jockey who won the Kentucky Derby has been fined and suspended for using the riding crop too much during the race.

Jockey Junior Alvarado struck Sovereignty, the three-year-old colt that won the crown, eight times during the race, officials say.

Regulations say a rider may strike a horse a maximum of six times with a crop.

Alvarado was fined $62,000 (£46,600) and suspended for two upcoming racing days at Churchill Downs by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.

All 11 Westhill High School lacrosse players suspected of being involved in hazing a teammate in Syracuse, New York, have turned themselves in, Onondaga County First Chief Assistant District Attorney Joseph Coolican said Wednesday.

The non-juvenile students will be arraigned, while the juveniles will go “straight to family court,” Coolican said. They face misdemeanor charges of unlawful imprisonment, District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.

Top former college athlete among six dead in New York plane crash

A private plane carrying six people crashed in an open field in upstate New York on Saturday, killing all on board, authorities say.

Among those on board were celebrated former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) football player Karenna Groff, her parents and her brother, according to a family statement.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the family had been travelling for a holiday celebration when the crash happened.
