Useless Government

I have a conflict.

I don't much like Linda McMahon, President Donald Trump's new Education Secretary. I sued her once.

She and her sleazy husband, Vince, owned a circus called World Wrestling Entertainment.

When I did a silly ABC news video on how the matches are staged, one of their 280-pound actors beat me up. A wrestler said Vince told him to do it.

But now, I like what Linda's doing!

5 million student loan borrowers face mandatory collections starting May 5

Some 5 million Americans with defaulted student loan payments will have their loans sent for collections on May 5, the Department of Education announced on Monday.

Next month, for the first time since student loan payments were paused due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Education Department will collect the debts from borrowers who had defaulted -- which means they hadn’t paid their debts for around nine months or 270 days -- before the pandemic.

‘Borrowers have zero power’: Trump moving student loans to SBA sparks concern, confusion

President Trump moving student loans from the Education Department to the Small Business Administration (SBA) is rattling those affected, who say it is prime evidence that the White House has no real plan for its efforts to dismantle the Department of Education.

Trump signed an executive order Thursday seeking to wind down the Education Department, and he said student loans would move to the SBA the next day — the same day that agency announced it was cutting 40 percent of its workforce.

Trump says Education Department will no longer oversee student loans, 'special needs'

President Donald Trump continued the unwinding of the U.S. Department of Education on Friday, announcing that the management of the entire federal student loan portfolio and of the department's "special needs" programs would be moved to other federal agencies effective immediately.

Appearing in the Oval Office with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump said, "I've decided that the SBA, the Small Business Administration, headed by Kelly Loeffler, a terrific person, will handle all of the student loan portfolio. We have a portfolio that's very large," Trump said.

Trump Will ‘Greatly Minimize’ Education Department With Executive Order—But Student Loans, Pell Grants Will Be Under Federal Control

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Thursday that will make the Department of Education “much smaller than it is today,” but keep some “critical functions,” such as Title I and student loans, under federal control, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, confirming previous reports Trump will implement the long-promised order later in the day.

Student Loan Update as Trump Set to Order Department of Education Shutdown

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Thursday directing the shutdown of the U.S. Education Department, fulfilling a campaign pledge to eliminate the agency, which has long been a conservative target.

Federal student loan payments, federal funding for students with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Title I funding for low-income schools will remain unchanged under the order, according to reports.

DOGE cut off from student loan data, for now

An agreement reached between the student association and Department of Education Tuesday prevents DOGE from accessing a handful of systems, including the National Student Loan Data System and the Aid Awareness and Application Processing until February 17. The agreement gives D.C. District Court Judge Randolph Moss time to hold a Feb. 14 hearing on a restraining order blocking DOGE from accessing the information. Moss was skeptical of the student association’s claims during a hearing Tuesday, stating he did not see how DOGE’s access to student loan data caused harm. A...

Biden-Harris Administration Seek to Expand Relief for Student Loan Borrowers

The Biden-Harris administration has announced new proposed regulations to expand student debt relief, potentially impacting around 8 million borrowers facing financial hardship. The proposal, introduced by the U.S. Department of Education, would allow the Secretary of Education to forgive loans in cases where borrowers are unlikely to repay due to severe hardship or where continued collection costs are deemed unjustified.

Biden announces $4.7 billion in new student loan forgiveness ahead of election

The Biden administration is plugging its student loan plans one more time ahead of Election Day, announcing another $4.7 billion of loans that will not have to be repaid by roughly 60,000 people. “For too long, the government failed to live up to its commitments, and only 7,000 people had ever received forgiveness under Public Service Loan Forgiveness before Vice President Kamala Harris and I took office,” President Joe Biden said in a prepared statement. “Now over 1 million public service workers have gotten the relief they are entitled to...
