The geothermal gamble: Fervo’s bold bid to disrupt clean energy
Fervo Energy’s geothermal drilling rig is pictured Monday, May 12, 2025, in Beaver County, Utah. Fervo has drilled over 75% of the wells for Phase I of the development. Industrial geothermal energy has been used for nearly two centuries. It‘s not a new concept, but in the United States, it‘s taken a backseat to other renewable energy sources like wind and hydropower. One company is trying to change that. Founded in 2017, Texas-based Fervo Energy is making groundbreaking moves in the clean energy landscape, and they’re doing it in Utah’s...
Windham man gets probation for tampering with truck emissions monitors
Isaac Allen, owner of Red Barn Diesel Performance, was sentenced May 7 to three years of probation for tampering with environmental monitoring devices on multiple diesel vehicles and obstructing the investigation of the Environmental Protection Agency. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Maine, U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen sentenced Allen to a three-year term of probation and a $40,000 fine, the maximum recommended amount for his offense level. Allen initially pled guilty to the crime in November 2024. As part of his...
Republicans Push for Surge in Geothermal Energy on Federal Land
A drill rig stands at a Fervo Energy geothermal site under construction near Milford, Utah, in 2023. Republican lawmakers are pushing to launch a series of geothermal energy projects on federal land in the Southwest. GOP members of the House Committee on Natural Resources convened for a hearing in Cedar City, Utah, on Monday to advocate for galvanizing geothermal energy projects, a renewable-energy source that takes heat from deep beneath the earth and uses it to generate energy for heating, cooling and electricity. The process is similar to fracking, but...
This California county has the highest death rate for climate change-driven wildfire smoke
The tally is greater than any other state over the 15-year study period. A rural Northern California county — Trinity County — had the country’s highest rate of deaths from climate change-driven wildfires and microscopic smoke and soot particles, also known as PM2.5. The study is the first to quantify how much climate change has impacted rates of death from wildfire PM2.5 at the state and county levels, according to the authors. They reported the biggest increases in the western United States. The scientists developed models that linked weather data...
Cosmic rays, not carbon dioxide, cause climate change
When a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Dr John Clauser, labels the claims about greenhouse gases warming the Earth as “pseudoscience” and describes them as “a dangerous corruption of science,” I urge you to take notice. He further stated that “the IPCC is one of the worst sources of dangerous misinformation,” and remarked that climate science has “metastasized into massive shock-journalistic pseudoscience.” Similarly, Professor Harold (Hal) Lewis, a distinguished physicist, called such claims “the biggest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud” he had encountered in his lifetime.
Modeling framework predicts accelerated global vegetation growth under climate change
This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlighted the following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: A new study led by researchers from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has revealed significant increases in global vegetation growth under different climate scenarios. The findings were published in Global Change Biology.
NOAA will no longer track costs of extreme weather fueled by climate change under Trump
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will no longer track the cost of climate change-fueled weather disasters, including floods, heat waves, wildfires and more. It is the latest example of changes to the agency and the Trump administration limiting federal government resources on climate change. NOAA falls under the U.S. Department of Commerce and is tasked with daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring. It is also parent to the National Weather Service.
Politics, AI, Climate Change—Nothing Is Off Limits Inside Their Maryland Home
Joe and Anne Andrew are using their newly renovated, modern house in Bethesda, Md., as a venue for high-fuel gatherings they call salons. They hope the policy-oriented networking opportunities will drive greater engagement on issues like climate change and the arts. “There are a lot of people out there who have a lot of good ideas who are not always talking to each other,” says Anne, 69, an environmental attorney who was former President Obama’s ambassador to Costa Rica from 2010 to 2013. “We see a lot of value in...
How Business Is Really Talking About Climate Change
Greetings from Los Angeles where the Milken Global Conference concluded earlier this week. For the uninitiated, Milken is a key stop on the conference circuit for many business and finance leaders—a great way to escape Manhattan to brush shoulders with industry titans and top policymakers in Beverly Hills. It is by no means a climate conference. This year, public sessions with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang drew packed ballrooms. But, to many, the real draw of the conference is the behind-the-scenes discussions—an opportunity for information...
