Oregon, Washington trail almost every state in adding green energy

On Feb. 17, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek released a video assuring Oregonians that Donald Trump would not derail the progressive state’s efforts to combat climate change. As promised during his presidential campaign, Trump had issued executive orders during his first week in office aimed at halting new sources of wind power and freezing Biden-era funding for renewable energy. Oregon, Kotek said, had been “leading the way for years on courageous state policies to fight climate change.” Along with neighboring Washington state, Oregon has set an ambitious mandate for electric utilities...

Trump tariffs sour opening of NYC candy store by Zabar scion: ‘I’m eating the cost’

The chaos caused by President Trump’s tariffs have been a bitter pill to swallow for those planning to open a restaurant in the Big Apple – including a sweets shop from the scion of the famed Zabar family. For now the candy prices are stable and comparable to other hotspots as foodie entrepreneurs appear to be eating the higher prices they’ve been paying thanks to the uncertainty of tariffs, and other issues. Sasha Zabar, who on Thursday is launching Glace Candy, a new global candy store next to his viral...

Water in the arid West and how Sen. John Curtis wants to shore up needs

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has already issued an emergency drought declaration for 17 of the state’s 29 counties. Companion legislation has been introduced in the House. A map released this month by the U.S....

Opponents pack DEQ public hearing on Zenith air quality permit

About 200 people attended a public hearing by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality on Zenith Energy’s draft air quality permit, a document the company needs to continue offloading and storing crude oil and renewable fuels in Northwest Portland. The hearing on Monday night marked the relaunch of Zenith’s air permit process after state regulators put it on hold last fall in the wake of an unannounced inspection and a $372,600 fine issued to the company over unauthorized use of a dock near its terminal on the Willamette River. Zenith...

Protesters arrested at House committee working on plan to cut Medicaid spending

Dozens of protesters and disability advocates were arrested for disrupting a House Energy and Commerce Committee meeting to fine-tune legislation that includes Medicaid cuts. The U.S. Capitol Police arrested 25 people for illegally demonstrating inside the Rayburn House Office Building, where the meeting was taking place. More arrests were also being made. The arrests came as lawmakers on the panel were beginning what is expected to be a marathon hearing to parse through the measure, which includes billions in cuts to Medicaid spending over the next decade and is expected...

House GOP Launches Marathon Budget Hearings

Tax breaks tallying more than $5 trillion — but also sizable reductions in Medicaid health care, food stamps for older Americans and green energy strategies to fight climate change — are all up for debate Tuesday as the House Republicans launch marathon public hearings on their "big, beautiful bill." It's a long day and night ahead. Republicans are working to push President Donald Trump's signature legislative package through a gauntlet of committee hearings over mounting opposition from Democrats, advocacy groups and even some wary Republicans themselves. Right from the start,...
