National Weather Service no longer translating products for non-English speakers
The National Weather Service is no longer providing language translations of its products, a change that experts say could put non-English speakers at risk of missing potentially life-saving warnings about extreme weather.
The weather service has “paused” the translations because its contract with the provider has lapsed, NWS spokesperson Michael Musher said. He declined further comment.
National Weather Service will no longer translate emergency warnings for non-English speakers

English as the New Standard: Understanding Language Policies Under Trump
On March 1st, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order declaring English as the official language of the United States. This marks the first time the country has ever designated an official language in its nearly 250-year history.
America Doesn’t Need an Official Language
I was 3 years old the first time I mixed up Spanish and English. It would not be the last.
It was 1975, and my family had recently migrated from Peru to Northern California. Shortly after our arrival, according to Lozada lore, I asked my parents and older sisters, “¿Vamos a tener todo lo sinisario?,” meaning, “Will we have everything we need?”
Yes to English as the Official Language
People who don’t learn English are limiting their educational and economic opportunities.
‘Official” is a very English word. It has its roots in the Old French “oficial” and the Latin “officialis,” and now — thanks to a new Trump executive order — describes the status of the English language.
President Trump’s executive action making English our official language repeals a Bill Clinton executive order that required the government, as well as groups receiving federal funds, to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.
